Okay, so I’ve been seeing these “thai pillows” all over my Pinterest feed, and they looked super comfy and stylish. I decided I had to try making one myself. I’m no sewing expert, but I figured, how hard could it be, right?

Finding the Stuff
First things first, I gathered my materials. I dug around in my fabric stash and found some leftover canvas fabric – perfect for that durable, textured look. Then I needed stuffing. I initially thought about using those poly-fill bags from the craft store, but then I remembered I had an old, unused kapok mattress. Bingo! Kapok is traditional for these pillows, and it’s supposed to be super supportive. Then I grabbed a regular home sewing *’s the spirit!
The Messy Part
- I measured and cut the fabric into three long rectangles. I didn’t use a pattern, just kind of eyeballed it based on pictures I saw online. I think they were something like 18×50 inches each, but don’t quote me on that.
- Next, I sewed those rectangles together, leaving one end open. It was a bit tricky keeping the seams straight, and my sewing machine definitely struggled a bit with the thick canvas.
- Then came the kapok. I ripped open that old mattress (which was a surprisingly dusty and messy operation!), and started stuffing the pillow sections.
Stuffing and Shaping
This part was way harder than I expected. Getting the kapok evenly distributed was a real pain. I poked and prodded and shifted things around for ages. I wanted that nice, firm, triangular shape, but it kept wanting to be lumpy and uneven. There might have been some frustrated sighs involved. I had to stuff each section super tight to get it to hold its shape.
The Final Touches
Once I was (mostly) satisfied with the stuffing, I hand-sewed the open end closed. I’m not great at hand-sewing, so it’s a little wonky, but hey, it’s functional. And then I folded the long, stuffed rectangle into the triangle shape and stitched the sections together to hold it all in place.I used upholstery thread for this part, which I found just lying in my toolbox. It’s really great!
The Result
Honestly, it’s not perfect. It’s a little lopsided, and the stitching isn’t exactly professional-looking. But you know what? It’s super comfortable! And it actually looks pretty good on my couch. It adds that bohemian vibe I was going for. Plus, I made it myself, which is pretty cool. Would I do it again? Maybe. With a pattern and a bit more patience next time. But for a first attempt, I’m calling it a win!
