Okay, so I’ve been wanting to make these “green bay rings” for a while now. I saw them somewhere online, maybe Pinterest? Whatever, they looked delicious and seemed easy enough, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I’m not the best cook, but I try.
First, I had to gather all the stuff. I already had some crescent roll dough in the fridge, that was a good start. Then I grabbed some ham and Swiss cheese from the deli section at the store. Also needed some butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and poppy seeds. Pretty basic ingredients, actually.
Getting Started
The first step was to get the oven going. I preheated it to 350 degrees. While that was warming up, I unrolled the crescent dough on a baking sheet. I just kind of spread it out flat, trying to keep it in one big piece. Not gonna lie, it ripped a little, but I just patched it up.
Then I layered the ham and Swiss on top of the dough. I probably used too much cheese, because, well, I love cheese. I tried to cover the whole dough area, leaving a little bit of an edge.
The Tricky Part
Next, I had to roll the whole thing up. This was kind of a pain. It kept wanting to stick to itself and the cheese was trying to escape. But I managed to get it into a somewhat log-like shape. Then I sliced it into about 1-inch thick pieces. They weren’t perfect circles, more like ovals, but who cares, right?
Making them Golden
I melted some butter in a bowl and stirred in the Dijon, Worcestershire, and poppy seeds. The recipe said to brush this mixture on top of the rings, but I just kind of spooned it over. I wanted to make sure they were good and coated.
Bake Time!
Finally, I popped the baking sheet into the oven. The recipe said to bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they were golden brown. I think mine took a little longer, maybe closer to 25 minutes. I just kept an eye on them until they looked done.
The Result
They actually turned out pretty good! The dough was nice and flaky, the ham and cheese were melted and gooey, and the poppy seed topping gave it a nice little crunch. They were super easy to make, even for a kitchen klutz like me.
Definitely a win, I would make it again.
