Well, I reckon many of ya’ll know Phil Mickelson, don’t ya? He’s the fella what’s been swingin’ his clubs on the PGA Tour for years now. A real household name, he is. But things been changin’ for ol’ Phil recently, specially with his big ol’ sponsorship deal with KPMG. I gotta tell ya, it ain’t exactly a feel-good story, and I’m sure a lotta folks got their heads scratchin’ about what went down between them two. Let me spin ya a tale about it.

Phil, he’s been with KPMG since back in 2008, that’s a mighty long time. You’d think that’s somethin’ that’d last forever, but we all know things ain’t always so simple. Now, recently, Phil found himself in some hot water over a few things he said ‘bout Saudi Arabia and a new golf league they was tryin’ to start. He was talkin’ ‘bout the human rights issues over there, but also sayin’ that he might join this new golf league if it was gonna make the PGA Tour better. Well, turns out, that didn’t sit too well with a lotta folks, includin’ his long-time sponsor, KPMG.
Now, KPMG, they’ve always been proud to support golf. They been workin’ with other big names like Stacy Lewis, Collin Morikawa, and Maverick McNealy. But when Phil got to stirrin’ up them controversies, things started fallin’ apart. I reckon they didn’t want no part in the mess. So, just like that, Phil and KPMG decided to end their partnership. Just like that, done and dusted. They said it was a mutual decision, but I’m sure there was some hard feelings on both sides. KPMG wished him the best, but that was that.
It’s a real shame, too, because Phil’s deal with KPMG was mighty lucrative. Some folks over at Forbes say Phil was makin’ over $30 million a year just from his sponsorship deals, and KPMG was a big part of that. You gotta think, he must’ve had a pretty sweet deal with them, wearin’ their logo all over his gear when he played. But I suppose no matter how much money is on the table, there’s always gonna be some things that matter more. And well, sometimes them things come out in public and it gets real messy.
Now, Phil, he done apologized for his comments, sayin’ he wasn’t tryin’ to cause no trouble, but folks didn’t take kindly to what he said. I guess you can’t always take back what’s been said once it’s out there, can ya? KPMG wasn’t the only ones pullin’ away from Phil, neither. There’s other companies, like Callaway, that started to re-evaluate their relationship with him. It’s a tough break for someone who’s been so successful on the golf course, but it goes to show that words can have mighty consequences, especially when you’re in the spotlight like Phil.
It don’t seem like Phil’s all alone, though. He’s still got plenty of fans, and there’s plenty of folks who still support him no matter what. But the world of sponsorship and golf, well, it’s a tricky one. Money and politics can get all tangled up in there, and when someone steps outta line, it don’t always end pretty. Some folks might still root for Phil to bounce back, but I reckon he’s learned the hard way that it don’t take much to break a partnership that’s been goin’ strong for years.
But, y’all, it ain’t all bad news. Phil’s still playin’, still swingin’ that club, and no matter what happened with KPMG, I reckon he’s still got his eyes on the prize. Maybe the sponsorships will come back around, maybe they won’t. Time’ll tell. But one thing’s for sure: he’s made his mark in the world of golf, and I don’t think anyone’s forgettin’ about ol’ Phil Mickelson anytime soon.
So, that’s the story of Phil Mickelson and KPMG. A partnership that lasted over a decade, but came to an end ‘cause of some words that didn’t sit right with the powers that be. Ain’t no guarantees in this world, and that’s somethin’ Phil learned the hard way. But he’ll keep on swingin’, and I’m sure his fans’ll keep on watchin’.
