Alright, listen up, y’all. Let me tell ya ’bout this golf thing, the Farmers Open, or whatever they call it. Starts on a Wednesday, can ya believe it? Wednesday! Who ever heard of such a thing? Golf ain’t supposed to start on no Wednesday, but these city folks, they got their reasons, I guess.
Now, they say it’s ’cause of them football games, the NFL, you know? Big ol’ fellas runnin’ around, smashin’ into each other. Seems like everybody and their grandma watches them games on Sundays. So, them golf fellas, they gotta move their little game to Wednesday so folks don’t forget about ’em. Makes sense, I reckon, if you’re into that sort of thing. Me, I’d rather watch the chickens peck around the yard, but to each their own, I always say.
They play this golf at a place called Torrey Pines, some fancy golf course down in San Diego. La Jolla, they call it. Sounds highfalutin’ to me, but I ain’t never been there. Anyways, them golfers go out there and whack little white balls with sticks. Tryna get ’em in a hole, far as I can tell. Sounds like a waste of time if you ask me, but they pay ’em a whole heap of money for it. Nine million dollars, they say! Can you imagine? Nine million dollars just for hittin’ little balls around. Land sakes, what a world.
- First two days, they play on two different courses, North and South, they call ’em.
- Then, the last two days, everybody plays on the South Course.
- Must be some kinda strategy to it, but I don’t get it.
This year, they’re playin’ at the end of January. January, mind you! It’s probably cold as a well digger’s butt out there, but them golfers, they don’t seem to mind. They got their fancy pants and their little sweaters, and they’re out there swingin’ away, rain or shine. Tougher than they look, I guess.
This whole Wednesday start thing, it’s all ’bout the TV, see? Them TV folks, they want the most eyeballs watchin’, and them football games, they got all the eyeballs on Sundays. So, golf gotta move, gotta find a day where folks ain’t glued to the football. Wednesday, it is. Makes ya wonder, don’t it? What’s the world comin’ to when golf gotta hide from football?
Now, I heard tell that them football games, they’re the most watched things on TV. Out of a hundred most-watched sports events, 96 are football! Can you beat that? Golf ain’t even close. The Masters, that’s a big golf thing, but even that’s way down the list. Way, way down. So, I guess golf gotta do what golf gotta do to get some attention. Start on a Wednesday, so be it. Ain’t gonna hurt nothin’, I reckon.
Anyways, that’s the story as I heard it. Farmers Open, starts on a Wednesday, all ’cause of them football games. Rich folks hittin’ balls around for a whole lotta money. And me? I’ll be here, tendin’ to my chickens, like always. That’s a job that makes sense, at least to me. Golf on a Wednesday… Lord have mercy.
So, if you’re a golf fan, or a football fan, or just a fan of watchin’ grown men chase little white balls, tune in on Wednesday. Or don’t. Makes no difference to me. But now you know why it’s startin’ on a Wednesday, and that’s the important thing, right? Right. Now, go on and get about your business, y’all.
