Okay, so I wanted to see what this Drake Maye guy was all about, especially his 40-yard dash time. I mean, the dude’s supposed to be a big deal in football, right?

First, I hit up the internet, you know, just to get a feel for what people are saying. Turns out, most sources, like NFL Draft Buzz, are saying he clocks in at 4.60 seconds for the 40. That’s pretty fast, especially for a quarterback.
Then I dug a bit deeper. The guy’s got a good size, standing at 6’4″ and weighing in at 210 pounds. I mean that’s a big dude to be running that fast, right? You’d think he’d be all slow and lumbering, but nope, he’s got some speed on him.
I even tried to see if I could find his stats from when he first started playing. Nothing too crazy there – around 2,276 passing yards. But then again, rookies rarely set the world on fire. So, all I know he may not be great in the first season.
Alright, so here’s where it gets interesting. I decided I wanted to see if I could run a 40-yard dash myself and maybe get somewhere close to Maye’s time. Now, I’m no athlete, but I figured, how hard could it be?
I found a local track, got myself a stopwatch (well, used the one on my phone), and warmed up a bit. Stretching, some light jogging, you know, the usual. Then, I lined myself up, took a deep breath, and…GO!
My first attempt? Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty. I felt like I was running in slow motion. My time? A whopping 8.5 seconds. Yeah, I know, miles away from Maye’s 4.60. I felt gassed but I figured, I gotta try again. You know, for science, and for my dignity.
I took a short break, caught my breath, and gave it another shot. This time, I tried to focus on my form, pumping my arms, driving my knees, all that good stuff they teach you in gym class. I don’t know if it helped, but the second time I got it down to 7.8 seconds. So I run more times.
- First time: 8.5 seconds
- Second time: 7.8 seconds
- Third time: 7.6 seconds
- Fourth time: 7.5 seconds
- Fifth time: 7.6 seconds
- Sixth time: 7.5 seconds
My efforts
It seemed like I could never be faster than 7.5 seconds. So after six tries, I was pretty much dead. I was huffing and puffing, legs feeling like jelly. I mean I finally gave up. I think the best I did was 7.5 seconds, which, let’s be honest, is still not great. But hey, at least I tried, right? And to think, Maye does it in 4.60…that’s just insane.

So, what did I learn from all this? Well, first off, Drake Maye is a beast. Running a 4.60 40-yard dash is no joke. Second, I’m definitely not cut out to be an NFL quarterback. And third, running is hard. Like, really hard. It was a fun little experiment, but I think I’ll stick to watching football from the comfort of my couch from now on. I felt like an idiot, but it was kind of a blast trying to see how I’d measure up. Definitely gave me a new appreciation for what these athletes can do.
